I'm Time Magazine's Person of the Year!

And so are you.

TTGSiMH Opinion Poll

I'm thinking about trying this whole new direction with my blog where I, you know, actually make some real posts. Even without much attention ye olde TTGSIMH continues to get 20+ hits per day. Thank ya'll for coming by. Now you can express your opinion on what you should be finding when you stop in. You can actually vote once a day so your insistence will be noted.

Which direction should I take with my blog?

Star Wars Horoscope for Scorpio

You are a powerful character.
You tend to be possessive and lusty - which explains your greedy nature.
You feel threatened when people try to order you around or control you.
You are prone to suspicion and jealousy - but your resilience and passion get you what you want.

Star wars character you are most like: Han Solo

Has anyone else been watching the endless cycle of Star Wars movies on Cinemax? It's all Star Wars all the time in our house. Getting this result makes me want to dig out my Han Solo RogueWear t-shirt that I got at the Smithsonian Star Wars exhibit. In other Star Wars geek news, we already have our reservations confirmed for Star Wars Weekends 2007 at Disney MGM Studios and we're looking forward to the rumored Star Wars themed fireworks show. Also, don't forget that there will be a special section of the Rose Parade on New Year's Day dedicated to the Star Wars 30th Anniversary, including the international 501st Stormtroopers. The Rose Queen will be dressing as Queen Amidala.

It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year

Your Holiday Personality is Caring

You like to reach out to people all year long, but you're especially giving during the holidays.
Make those you love homemade presents (like cookies or scarves). Call someone who might be feeling a little down. Give to your favorite charity.
Nope, You're Not a Grinch

Although you may feel Grinch-like at times, it's just because you're worn out from the holidays.
You get into the holiday spirit more than most people - and you truly enjoy celebrating with your family and friends.

You Are a Snowman

Friendly and fun, you enjoy bringing holiday cheer to everyone you know!
Your Dominant Thinking Style: Visioning

You are very insightful and tend to make decisions based on your insights.
You focus on how things should be - even if you haven't worked out the details.

An idealist, thinking of the future helps you guide your path.
You tend to give others long-term direction and momentum.

What Christmas Carol are you?

You are 'Jingle Bells'! Full of enthusiasm and good cheer, you are excited by the first appearances of Christmas decorations in shops and have been heard singing along to the piped music. Your attitude to Christmas is one of childlike delight - with a slightly mercenary streak. You definitely believe in Santa (you get more presents that way) and will put up your Christmas tree as early as possible. You really like carolling, and presents, and mince pies, and pudding, and will insist on getting everyone up at dawn to open presents immediately. So long as the food and presents are good, you will have a great Christmas.

Why Do You Think I Have This OUTRAGEOUS Accent...?

Well, ok, not so much...

It was hard to be surprised with the result after so many years of people showing shock and disbelief that I was a Southerner. A few people from Chicago have even assumed I was from there, a place I never ventured to until this year. Maybe I watched The Blues Brothers one too many times...

Elwood: It's 106 miles to Chicago, we've got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark and we're wearing sunglasses.
Jake: Hit it.

It Was a Dark and Stormy Stephen

Now that I've found out that I am #1 in "Colbert Fan Fiction" I feel that I really need to dedicate myself more seriously to my craft. The three basic plots, I suppose, are Stephen versus Stephen, Stephen versus nature (e.g., bears), and Stephen versus supernature (e.g., liberals). No, seriously, liberals. I don't mean to get all facty on you, but the first definition of supernatural on dictionary.com is, "of, pertaining to, or being above or beyond what is natural; unexplainable by natural law or phenomena; abnormal." I rest my case.

I just checked and it turns out that I am the #2 Google result for Colbert Fan Fiction. This makes me think that I should get serious about writing my Colbert Fan Fiction. Although for now I'm perfectly happy to hold my place on Colbert Fan Fiction by simply referring to "Colbert Fan Fiction" over and over.

But remember, you read it here first. Thoughts That Get Stuck in My Head: #2 in Colbert Fan Fiction. If I can just take down Colbert Nation, then I can be #1.

How to Distinguish Speakers

I've been scouting job options and when checking out a University I will see what sorts of things they have going on. At UNC Pembroke I noticed a link to announce their 2006-07 Distinguished Speakers Series. I have fond memories of going to see speakers at USM (Southern Miss, ya'll) when I was a teen so I immediately clicked to see what they had to offer.
CNN’s Nancy Grace and former presidential candidate and political commentator Pat Buchanan headline the 2006-07 Distinguished Speaker Series at The University of North Carolina at Pembroke.
Ewwww.

I had the fortitude to scroll down and saw that if I were promoting their series it would have read, "Poet Nikki Giovanni and humorist Mo Rocca headline the 2006-07 Distinguished Speaker Series..." I'm going to guess this difference in emphasis means that the folks at UNC Pembroke are not my people.

You Are a Snarky Blogger!

You've got a razor sharp wit that bloggers are secretly scared of.
And that's why they read your posts as often as they can!

Would you make a good business manager?

The Natural Leader

If you want to move up the ranks, you probably have what it takes to make that climb! You're creative, assertive, and empathetic. You easily draw groups together and enjoy heading them up. Most promissing, you enjoy bringing out the best in others. You have high expectations of them - possibly higher than they have of themselves - and you're prepared to do what it takes to help them realize that potential. Just be mindful not to let more superficially forceful characters push you out of the way.

Hero, n. a person who, in the opinion of others, has heroic qualities or has performed a heroic act and is regarded as a model or ideal

I'm glad that I made my way back over to Leilani Munter's blog this week. She's my hero. I want to be her when I grow up. (Ok, I'm older than she is, but let me dream!) To give her credit where credit is due, she's a progressive woman in the middle of an extremely conservative environment - both her sport and her adopted state. Regardless of the social pressures around her, Leilani continues to rock on. And she's fun. In her post to encourage everyone to see "An Inconvenient Truth" she says:
I can't offically do this, since I am not the great Stephen "Truthiness" Colbert, but I call on you Stephen, to put Dubya ON NOTICE.
I find it hard to believe that Stephen will miss the fact that a hot, intelligent, progressive woman called him the great Stephen "Truthiness" Colbert. I see a Colbert Report guest spot coming up. A little suggestion for you, Leilani, is that when he runs over and mentions that post you should tell him you meant "greatest."

The thing I can't believe is that I see the possibility of going to a race in my future so that I can meet her. Amazing. She's definitely expanding the demographic of racing fans. I admire her for the same reason I've always said my favorite chick flicks are Aliens, T-2, and Cutthroat Island. Strong women rock.

Tell Me Something I Don't Know

You Are Lavender

You are a sweet person with a very soft personality.
People become easily entranced with you. They seem to glow around you.
You have a quiet energy that can keep you active late into the night.
Even if you aren't the life of the party, you definitely keep the party going.

Don't try to reconcile the loud Lamborghini me with this. Your brain will seep out of your ears. Just know that they are both true.

A Progressive Woman

Back in March I mentioned running across a promo for the Hostess Race Divas in the grocery store. I've had the Race Divas as one of my alternating desktop wallpapers for awhile. I revisited the website last week and followed the link to Leilani Munter's website and made a very happy discovery on her blog. Leilani is a progressive!! That minister who fired a female Sunday school teacher because, "I do not permit a woman to teach or to have authority over a man; she must be silent"? Leilani ran down ALL of his contact information so that, well, I'll let her tell you. "Keeping in mind that Tim thinks women should remain silent, I gathered all of Tim's contact information so you, like me, can let Tim know how you feel." Yep, go to the blog to get his contact information. (I don't want to deprive Leilani of hits - and new fans.)

And how can you not love her personal slogan? RACE HARD. PLAY HARD. NAP HARD. You got it, sister. Now I want to go drive fast somewhere...

Zen Noir

Sometimes you come across an idea that is so perfect you almost can't breathe. For me, Zen Noir is that idea. (Weird, but true.)
A nameless detective, still mourning the loss of his wife, investigates a mysterious death in a Buddhist temple, but his logical, left-brained crime-solving skills are useless in the intuitive, non-linear world of Zen.

... the Detective’s logical mind is thwarted at every turn by his suspects' Zen thinking...

Detective: Where were you at the time of the murder?

Monk: What exactly do you mean by time?

Increasingly confused and unnerved, haunted by his dead wife’s ghost, and with his investigation going nowhere, the Detective finds himself drawn into a deeper, darker, more personal mystery, where he must confront terrifying questions about love and loss, which lead to a startling realization: the mystery he's there to solve isn't a murder at all, but the mystery of death itself.
You can check it out on IMDB and up the film's stats.

Career Suicide?

I assume that you've been up on the news enough to see that Paramount ditched Tom Cruise and then the head of Viacom pretty much called Cruise a looney. (There are conflicting reports and that's not a direct quote, but that's the gist.)

So I found it interesting today that the story got a new twist. Cruise's talent agency, CAA, is considering boycotting Paramount.

Based on reading the article I assume that they expect my reaction to be, "Dang, they're right. Paramount is evil and CAA should avenge Tom Cruise!"

Uh, no.

My reaction was immediately, "Lord, it's a whole passel of nutso Scientologists. I hope their boycott bankrupts them."

Somehow I don't think that was what they were after. I went from thinking that Cruise and a few other celebrities were off their rockers to thinking that a whole organization is probably nuttier than a case of Planter's.

Colbert Shares My Brain

Do you ever have one of those weird moments when someone does something you thought only you did? Sure, Stephen did it as a joke. But I really kept an album of my favorite print ads when I was a teenager. Yes, seriously. I dismantled it to use pieces in some Marketing class projects back in college, but most of it remains intact downstairs in my basement. My husband looked up during Stephen's bit and said, "Jesus, honey, he's you."

Colbert seems a bit surprised that there are no longer unifying ads like we experienced in our youth, so I guess I should have shared my Marketing paper from 1989 with him: "The Demassification of the American Market."

Call me, Stephen. We'll do lunch.

Northwestern Wins Over Yale*

Alexandra Robbins seemed like she should be cool, but then she totally didn't seem to get Stephen on tonight's Colbert Report. In her bio it says that in her spare time she "plays on three soccer teams, watches NFL games, bakes pies and reminisces about the original Star Wars trilogy." Did they not recognize each other's inner geek?

Alexandra, Stephen. Meet me in Orlando for Star Wars Weekends next Memorial Day. We can heal this rift.

*Stephen went to Northwestern and Alexandra went to Yale. I'm calling this one for Northwestern because Alexandra totally didn't seem to catch on that Stephen's show is satire.
